In the history of a municipality it is not very often that the developement of a sport equipment called "Sky" changes a little village into an international tourist center. This happened 1898 in Saalbach Hinterglemm. In farmer times the municipality was one of the poorest in our region. The economic boom of Salzburg did not reach our valley. The last hard centuries were handled by the inhabitants of our valley with much work and there device was: "We must collaborate!".
In this year Josef Wallner brings the first "Sky" into our village. Wallner wants to leave his village and move to Saalbach. But this was not possible, because his family was to big and so there was no place for his family. He went back! As a present he gave Mr. Bachmann a pair of ski! It was a luck that the teacher in Saalbach, Peter Höll, gets the skis and he knows what they are for. He knows the book of Fritjof Nansen "On snowboots through Greenland" and knows also that skiing is in the Styrie already a famous sport. He copies some skis and gives them to some pupils for skiing. This is the beginning of skiing in Saalbach. The pupils were enthusiastic. The older people are not interested in the new sport called skiing.
